Tips for a Successful Grand Opening
A picture is worth a thousand words!
All attention will be focused on this moment, as well as the cameras. Pay attention to what’s behind you! If you have a wall with your logo or a showroom displaying your products, these are good options. No good background options? Rent a backdrop instead! If you have a large crowd, rent a stage section so everyone can see. Find a way to incorporate your logo, and make sure someone is assigned to take photos that knows what they’re doing.
Choose a date and time
Once you know whether you want to celebrate with a crowd or small group, choose a date and time. We recommend hosting your event in the late afternoon or early evening — around 5 p.m. is ideal — to make it convenient for most people to attend.
Guest List
The goal is to show off your business to as many people as possible. Ribbon-cutting events are also great ways to meet your business neighbors, other chamber members and the community you serve. Can’t invite the whole town? A small gathering can be a great way to showcase your business to target markets or VIPs. The Chamber of Commerce can help get VIPs to your event. Chamber Ambassadors will attend to help you celebrate your success as well.
The Big Moment
You will have the opportunity to say a few words about your new business! Prepare these comments in advance so you won’t get stage fright. If you think you need it, rent a small PA system so people can hear you. If you’re working with the Chamber of Commerce, they will provide the large scissors, otherwise you can rent them too. Most people either ask two people to hold the ribbon or tie it to our stanchions.
Food, glorious food!
Food and beverages turn a ho-hum event into a party. While a fully catered affair can be spectacular, simple hors d’oeuvres and soft drinks are more than adequate to get the fun started. Provide at least some seating as some guests may not be able to stand for long. Guests will also thank you for providing cocktail tables so they don’t have to try to hold their plate, drink and other stuff all at once!
